Plastic 2 Fuel: Puerto Rico Project
In April 2018, our Puerto Rico team traveled to Puerto Rico, where they met with public works officials and green organizations, toured waste facilities and investigated the plastic waste problem of the island. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, plastic waste processing has curtailed.
Plastic Ocean Project is researching the viability of turning landfill bound plastic waste into fuel. This Spring we began feasibility studies in both Puerto Rico and Haiti.
Islands face unique circumstances managing their solid waste within their special relationships to the oceans. Giving plastic waste value will create a cleaner environment, reduce landfill waste, and promote economic growth. Our initial findings show great enthusiasm for this solution.
