What are Fishing4Plastic Tournaments?
Boat owners, charters, dive boats, and interested individuals are invited to form teams and join us in cleaning up our ocean by participating in the 4th Fishing 4 Plastic Tournament on October 3rd, 2018! Teams will be going offshore near the Gulf Stream to find Sargassum mats (a type of brown algae), which are great at collecting plastics that have found their way into the oceans. Teams will also be searching for ghost gear (lost fishing gear) that have been known to entangle marine life, including marine mammals and sea turtles. Our goal is to delicately remove as much plastic pollution as possible on June 3rd while having fun!
Why this area?
The area in which we will be fishing for plastics is just south of Hope Spot: Hatteras, one of the most important fishing spots on the east coast. It also boasts the highest density and biodiversity of marine mammals on the east coast, and hosts five of the seven species of sea turtles. Sargassum mats are very common in this area as well, and can host 81 species of fish. Keeping this part of the ocean clean and healthy is critical to the survival of dozens of marine species.
