Boat owners, charters, dive boats, and interested individuals are invited to form teams and join us in cleaning up our ocean by participating in the Fishing4Plastic Tournament! Teams will be going offshore near the Gulf Stream to find Sargassum mats which are great at collecting marine plastics. Teams will also be searching for lost fishing gear that can entangle marine life. Our goal is to delicately remove as much plastic pollution from this habitat as possible while having fun looking for marine life.
Prizes will be awarded to teams who collects: the Most Trash by Weight, Most Number of Pieces, and Most Unique Item Found.
Join us on the docks for the OFE Expo featuring local Ocean Friendly Establishments, food, drinks, live music, and activities. Support our fisherman and teams while they use their resources to help solve our problem. The OFE Expo is put on by the Crystal Coast Water Keeper.
Plastic Ocean Project has been "fishing for plastic" in the North Atlantic since 2012, predominately for research, but in 2016, we turned it into a tournament. We hire charter fishermen to take teams of people offshore to compete for prizes. We have fun and remove a lot of marine debris. This video is from our last visit off the coast of the Outer Banks, NC after Hurricane Dorian. Captain Charlie Moore is filmed stuck in the Sargassum while cleaning up the ocean.

What are Fishing4Plastic Tournaments?
Boat owners, charters, dive boats, and interested individuals are invited to form teams and join us in cleaning up our ocean by participating in the 4th Fishing 4 Plastic Tournament on October 3rd, 2018! Teams will be going offshore near the Gulf Stream to find Sargassum mats (a type of brown algae), which are great at collecting plastics that have found their way into the oceans. Teams will also be searching for ghost gear (lost fishing gear) that have been known to entangle marine life, including marine mammals and sea turtles. Our goal is to delicately remove as much plastic pollution as possible on June 3rd while having fun! |

Why this area? The area in which we will be fishing for plastics is just south of Hope Spot: Hatteras, one of the most important fishing spots on the east coast. It also boasts the highest density and biodiversity of marine mammals on the east coast, and hosts five of the seven species of sea turtles. Sargassum mats are very common in this area as well, and can host 81 species of fish. Keeping this part of the ocean clean and healthy is critical to the survival of dozens of marine species. |
